Rid yourself, pike…

During conversations many anglers say that they unhook the pikes in the water , without touching them by hands or the landing net. They said that in such way they guarantee the maximum comfort for the fish during this very stressful situation.

I decided to check this way of unhooking the pike. I wanted to document those activities with the camera and I asked my friend Radek for cooperation during fishing for pikes. For such attitude for the topic I was inclined by the knowledge that the person who is allowed to see the scene on the photo can discern and analyse the picture about 1/2000 seconds and which in “ real” the human perception will not record. Is unhooking the pike in the water such a good solution? In my opinion it is good solution only in some cases, for example when the pike is jammed shallowly on the outside of the jaw with one head or two from the barbless anchor. Moreover if the angler has a practice, proper equipment and good reflex can immediately jerk the anchor with only one move. It is worth remembering that barbless anchor is make our life easier.

Perfect situation

The perfect situation for angler and pike is occurs at the time when small or irregular pike unhook spontaneously from the barbless anchor during the last phase of towing . It is also very good in the situation (despite the record – breaking size of the fish) when the pike jams deeply, and the angler has got long pliers, the retractor for jaw, the experience in such situations and something soft, absolutely smooth on the boat or shore, for example fishing mat or thick foil. In such situation the pike may be subjected to treatment, and we may hope that on 99% it will finish for it tragically. I am an idealist and I know that this situation is not very frequent that is why it is worth having and using not expensive liquid for disinfection fish’ deep wounds ( the preparation for humans is not good for fish). I support releasing pikes, no matter how big they are. But if you dear angler, act differently, it means if you take the pike, you should think about learning how to treat the fish humanely. The best way is to kill the fish before taking off the lure. Please, remember after that.
